Funchal weather by season: what to expect

Updated 5 Oct 2026 · Madeira Journal

Madeira’s south coast (Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Caniço) is milder and drier than the north and the high peaks. Plan by microclimate, not by a single “island average.” Always check the day’s IPMA forecast and a wind map before mountain or levada days.

Spring (March–May)

Summer (June–August)

Autumn (September–November)

Winter (December–February)

Quick planning rules

  1. South coast for stable stays; north/east for greener scenery and more rain.
  2. Altitude changes weather faster than the calendar. A sunny Funchal morning can be fogged-in above 1,000 m.
  3. For same-day decisions, use IPMA + Windy (see our live island bookmarks).
